At the same time, the total value of fraudulent withdrawals increased by 70%, the RBC agency reports with reference to a study conducted by the Tinkoff Group. Experts explain the decrease in the average amount per fraudulent withdrawal by the fact that fraudsters tend to withdraw smaller amounts through several transactions so as not to attract the attention of financial monitoring services. With successful and unsuccessful fraudulent withdrawals taken into account, an average amount of attempted withdrawal is 12% less than in 2019.

The number of fraudulent transactions increased by 60%. The share of social engineering in the total number of fraudulent transactions also increased reaching 80% in 2020 vs 67% in 2019. Most often, criminals used websites selling goods and services and fake websites of online stores.

“In about 36% of successful cases, the attacker presented himself as a seller responding to an advertisement on specialized sites (for example, Avito, Yula) and in social networks. The buyers entered their card details using a false link or paid for a non-existent product,” the agency quotes the researchers as saying.
