Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Sberbank has detected several new fraud schemes, said Bank’s Deputy Board Chairman Stanislav Kuznetsov, with fake recruitment agencies, VAT refund schemes and false offers for COVID-19 tests among them.

In particular, the attackers implementing the VAT refund scheme post videos on the Internet with an offer of VAT refunds to citizens who lost their incomes. Users follow the link available in the description to the video and make debit operations, which result in a loss of money.

Besides, some websites offer COVID-19 tests for sale. The users click a link that navigates them to a fake website where the later pay to scammers. The fraudsters use the same scheme to offer masks.

Apart from that, scammers use hashtags of popular brands, offering to join a promo campaign to get money. To do this, they ask the user for card details and a one-time password via SMS. The same scheme is used in online surveys.
