Marketplaces facilitated sales worth 6.3 trillion rubles in 2024
The platform economy in 2024 brought in additional production of goods and services for the amount of 6.3 trillion rubles, said Supervisory Board Chairman of the Digital Platforms Association Andrey Sharonov at the SPIEF-2025 session, citing a study by the Higher School of Economics.
This refers to the products and services appeared in the economy stemming from the digital platforms operation, namely goods sold on marketplaces, logistics services that support the platforms’ activities, new production assets, etc., he explained.
Sharonov emphasized that the country's economy will keep to develop towards a platform model. In 2024, the turnover of the largest digital platforms amounted to 12 trillion rubles, that is 10 billion transactions, Sharonov added, citing the study. According to him, that accounts for one fifth of the total trade turnover in the country.
Sharonov also noted that, according to the Association of Online Trading Companies (AKIT), about 80% of sellers on digital platforms are small and medium-sized companies, which plays a key role in supporting entrepreneurship and creating jobs. He also recalled that, according to Rosstat, from 13 to 15 million people worked on platforms in 2024, of which 3.7 million are regular users.
Sharonov emphasized the importance of adaptive regulation, which will allow the sector to develop without “choking it off” in the early stages. He also noted that digital platforms have been operating in Russia for more than 20 years without special regulation, which allowed them to develop to gigantic proportions. It is important, he believes, to maintain a balance so that regulation does not stifle the rapidly growing sector.
