Bank of Russia re-scheduled digital ruble launch for mid-2026
The introduction of the new currency format has been postponed to mid-2026. This step is explained by the difficulties for some banks, including problems with technological independence, Deputy Head of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation Zulfiya Kakhrumanova noted.
The regulator's decision was influenced by a number of reasons such as energy security, legislative gaps, as well as problems with import substitution of some software, according to sources.
Bank of Russia’s Head Elvira Nabiullina explained that the mass launch of the digital ruble, scheduled for the summer of 2025, had been postponed because of the need to “polish all the details in the pilot” and consult with banks regarding the economic model most attractive for their clients.
