In Russia, cyber fraudsters stole over 3 billion rubles from bank clients in April-June, with as little as 7.4% of the stolen amount recovered.

Theft increased by almost 40% in 2021 (from 2.1 billion rubles in 2020), Lenta.ru reports with reference to the Bank of Russia’s figures.

In 2020, 12.8% of the funds stolen by fraudsters were returned to the Russians.

Money is stolen by cybercriminals primarily through online banking, phishing (fraudulent websites and links), viruses and vulnerabilities in software.

“Social engineering methods remain the main tool for cybercriminals to steal money from citizens. At the same time, telephone fraud is one of the main channels of such activities,” the Bank of Russia said.

The central bank’s statistics shows that the unauthorized transactions value has been growing since 2017, to reach 2.87 billion rubles in Q1 2021, 57% more compared to 2020.
