Synopsis

For the last 20 years a powerful, effective and self-evolving market has been developed in Russia, serving the needs of the Russian bank industry, consumers, merchants, as well as Russian economy in general.

Since the time of issuing of the first Russian payment card in October 1991, when as few as 5 Russian banks were entitled to issue/acquire Visa and Eurocard cards, the number of bank issuers and/or acquirers has grown by several hundred times, and the number of cards - by hundred million times.

According to the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, as of the last reporting date (January 1, 2012) 679 banks out of 979 ones registered in the Russian Federation had the right to issue and/or acquire bank cards. 668 of them were involved in card issuing and 602 - in acquiring. By that date more than 200.170 thousand cards had been issued by Russian banks.

The number of cards per capita in Russia as of the last reporting date (January 1, 2012) is already comparable to the similar figures demonstrated by the markets with a more developed payment infrastructure. Since the time of issue of the first bank card in Russia, the infrastructures have been built for almost every card business sector in the country.

A wide card acceptance network has been developed in Russia by the end of 2011. The ATMs and kiosks networks, that grew from 20 ATMs in 1993 to ... by January 1, 2012, have continued its dynamic growths all these years, even in the period of economic crisis of 2008.

For the last three years the ATM and kiosk market was growing approximately by 16.000 units annually. The percentage growth is correspondingly slowing down, since it takes place on a bigger installation base, yet it still remains one of the highest in Europe.

According to experts, among the total number of devices in the Russian market, formally classified as ATMs by the Bank of Russia (184.185 units as of January 1, 2012), 112.115 units can be considered ATMs in the context of traditional terminology (i.e. those with the cash-out function).

Approximately 65% of the ATMs market is formed by 15 leading banks. Almost 84% of ATMs with the cash-in function in Russia are installed by 13 major banks.

In the economy, where historically cash has prevailed in retail transactions, development of the vast kiosk network made a significant contribution to the improvement of financial literacy of the population, as well as to the developing a sustained habit of using the card not only to withdraw cash, but as an everyday payment tool (including payments for housing and public utilities).

At least ... devices with cash-in function requiring no cards, reported in the Bank of Russia statistics, can be easily assigned to kiosks. The vast majority of ATMs imported to Russia are produced by three major global manufacturers of banking equipment - NCR, Diebold and Wincor Nixdorf. Some good position was won by Nautilus last year. The same trends can be seen in the most of other countries, except for the Asian region, where local manufacturers hold strong positions. NCR is the largest supplier of ATMs to Russia. As for the second and the third places in terms of volumes of the bank self-service equipment supplies to the Russian Federation researchers" opinions differ.

In terms of number of ATMs per 1 million of population Russia is among 10 European countries holding the leading positions in this area. While the representatives of suppliers note specific peculiarities encountered by them in the Russian market, they still assess prospects for the bank self service development in Russia very positively.

By January 1, 2012 the aggregate amount of electronic terminals installed in the Russian market reached ... units.

The ATM and POS-terminal installation base available in Russia ensures further reduction of the load on the country"s economy caused by the necessity to support the cash circulation.

One of the most important trends of the payment market development was creation of the production infrastructure at the national level. For the last 20 years over 20 card manufacturers and suppliers, as well as their personalization facilities emerged that almost completely meet the needs of the Russian payment and telecommunication infrastructure.

Russia is the third country in the world (after India and China), where the e-money market is developing most dynamically. In 2010 the Russian e-money market continued its consistent growth. The volume of e-wallets replenishments grew from RUB40 to 70 billion, the number of active clients increased by 50% to reach 30 million last year.
